Atlas Law Group’s Advice: Do You Really Need a Business Lawyer?

March 2, 2020

If you’re in business for yourself, you know how stressful, exhilarating, time-consuming and fulfilling it is all at the same time, just like life. If you’ve started a business without a good business lawyer, it’s a bit like going through life without a doctor – everything seems fine until it isn't. When you need a lawyer, it’s critical to have an exceptional one that you can trust. At Atlas Law Group, we’ve been around long enough to know that every business, big or small, is going to need a lawyer.

Why Do You Need A Business Lawyer?

If you own a business, there are two professionals you’ll want to start a relationship with right away – an accountant and a lawyer. We understand wanting to do everything yourself. Business owners are often self-sufficient people who are used to relying on only themselves to get the job done.

Here’s the thing – the law isn’t very forgiving. If you want your business to enjoy smooth sailing, you need to ensure things are done above board legally so you and your business are protected.

Business Contracts

Most of the business you do all day long is on the backs of contracts you’ve signed. You have a contract with:

  • Landlord
  • Banks
  • Vendors
  • Clients
  • Employees
  • Utilities
  • Shipping companies
  • Healthcare providers

Given the scope of business that has a contract attached to it, you need to have a professional set of eyes look over each one.  Anytime you enter into a contract with someone, you and your business are bound to them and them to you.

Having a business lawyer means you have someone well-versed in the law to read and negotiate these contracts based solely on your best interests. Your lawyer can oversee the entire contact process from drawing them up, negotiating terms and final execution. If you need to break an agreement, only your lawyer will know the proper steps to take.

Too much is riding on each contract for them to not be passed through your lawyer’s hands. One bad deal can break a business, especially if it's just starting out.

General Business Practices

When you sat down and created your business plan, we’re sure it didn’t include every step that might have a legal ramification. That’s because the law and how your business fits into it is dynamic. Your role in the law will be different depending on the area of business you’re tackling at any given time.

Having a trusted lawyer to partner with means you leave nothing up to chance. You will have someone with whom you can quickly bounce off ideas or ask questions. Lawyers will help with things you didn’t anticipate, such as:

  • Zoning issues
  • Copyright and trademark advice
  • Employee leave of absence law
  • Terminating a disruptive employee
  • Overseeing an annual meeting

Whatever comes up, it’s better to have a lawyer sooner rather than later. If you’re already being sued, chances are you’ve waited too long to hire someone. Whatever it is can be dealt with, but it would potentially have been smoother to have a lawyer involved up front. It’s much easier to stay out of court than it is to get out once someone has dragged you in.
